Horizon Wars part 2 (waifu edition ' )

This is my wife's attempt at mini sculpting. 6mm (10mm grid for scale) FarmHammer 🐤 Eggsdar faction, the op force for my Space Porks.

2 heavy tanks, a combat walker, regular infantry and a heavy infantry chi-ken. WIP status, needs weaponization. Hope you like her stuff, she insists adding that it's 'her first time' whatever it means.

Nail or Fail?

Horizon Wars X laZyMinis

Hi! Recently got Osprey publishing's HORIZON WARS rulebook (OOP AFAIK).

6mm combined arms sci-fi wargame set of rules with optional setting. I decided it will be the bacon and eggs conflict so started to sculpt 6mm piggy troopers (space porcs), tanks and mechs while wife will be doing the chicken empire or whatever it will be called.

For scale, each square is 10mm.

Hope that WIP means anything to you. Meanwhile, stay safe.

Salud!

Diary of a mech man pt 6 (the more you ignore me, the closer I get)

I'm neglecting that dude lately as my situation is weird right now. Family, work...

Measured stuff, cut the pieces that would end being shoulder pads, glued, drilled, stuck old cheap ass robot toy arms, cut the pincers and pinned / glued in position I was happy with.

Close to completion, have to cast small bits like rivets, sculpt power tubes, plating and such. Detailing at this point can be either a chore as I really wanna finish or fun distressed activity. We'll see.

Veremos.

Diary of a mech man pt 5 (the belly or the beast)

The most useless part of the project so far, yet the most fun. I made some background texture for the cockpit. It will be 99% covered by the pilot so... I guess that was a little scape canvas to rest my mind over. Also built a small device to hang somewhere so everything isn't just on a table.

Glam shot before I cram it all inside the mech and thus, fall lost forever outside human sight.

Diary of a mech man pt 4 (bump, bump, bump!)

That's the sound of the fifteens while they are hitting in my trunk.

This is going to give the mech a military feel I guess. A bumper to prevent cockpit damage during mech to mech combat.

Rod work not much to write about. Tedious indeed. Drilled a couple holes, glued it ( baking soda + CA glue is proving super helpful in this build) and as my greenstuff world liquid green stuff tube leaked, used it to texture surfaces.

Diary of a mech man PT.3 (Happy Feet)

Feet done. Not shown in the picture but added texture to his "toes" as these pieces get the punishment of bumping into stuff instead of feet.

At the end I'll be riveting things here and there but for now I call it a day! 20mm square base mini for scale.

Pies listos.

Diary of a mech man PT.2 (mind the gap)

This project is proving (probing?) to be a real pain in the ass. Today I spent my hobby time filling gaps in the parts of my previous entry.

Then I decided body and legs/ feet needed to be distinct parts so worked some milliput putty in.

Next step was to build a pair of wheels /tracks for the back part of its feet, then power tool and file a fitting hole.

Finally embedded the track and added details. Sadly had time to finish just one leg :(

Stay tuned.

Hoy me he dedicado a rellenar huecos del paso anterior.

Diary of a mech man PT.1 (kitbashing a mech)

This is the first step in a series of kitbash / scratch building diary.

The project is taking so long and such amount of steps and effort (kind of) I decided not to wait till completion and release status updates instead.

Not long ago I sculpted a rather confused looking mech pilot. This is the robot's main frame for the body (paper clip dispensed from the 90s).

My aunt gave me this in my late teens as she knew how much I loved to hoard plastic bits. Always dreamed about making a mech out of it: decades later, time has come!

It needs a proper back, so cut and sanded plasticard and chopped a piece from a dollar store toy to add sort of a backpack.

Next was to fill some holes here and there using bits of plastic and plasticard which I detailed scoring panel lines and gluing bits.

Hope it makes any sense so far. Through next updates you'll see it shaping into (hopefully) a mech.

Cheers.

COC LCG ! Cthulhu fhtang!

These are a set from the boxed Living Card Game (LCG) The Call of Cthulhu (COC, you see now I wasn't speaking eldritch gibberish).

They are used to mark your resource cards as used. Before the LCG I had the CCG (collectible) and TBH (now this is ridiculous, madness) I haven't played the LCG which is the same but balanced.

Painting wise I was to paint a set stone grey and a set sand yellow but I found myself painting these just like that. Really.

Pics doesn't make it justice, IRL it all looks more subtle and natural and it took a hell of  photo editing to scratch the surface of what those really look like.

My hardest to photography mini to date. Mainly due the insane amount of info lurking in the shadows. To naked eye or almost look black but looking closer you find shadows are reddish.

Did to emphasize how important is working your shadows. Rich shadow work can make it up for an average light effect and can set a mood.

Eyes were painted as bead gems, and gloss varnished and somehow it look like the statue is looking at you.

Now what ? Could anyone give me an idea of how should I paint the other set of three (for my adversary) ?

Have sweet dreams. Deep ones.

The Flavour out of Space

Big assed "Lovecraftian" monster indeed. 80mm square based (custom).

There's few things I wanna discuss:

-Hobby/blogging outpacing. Does this happens to anyone else or it's just me? I mean, got this painted God knows how many days ago. Then I painted 2 busts, I'm on my 3rd now and still have to upload Cthulhus I painted way before my mech pilot (yellow dude) was done. I'm just not in the right mood 4 dat. Then I sit and take tons of pics all at once and thus, stopping from painting for a period of time (wich I hate doing).

So really, expect at least 3 mo' posts coming in a row.
Then photographing itself. OMG hate that part so much. To get 3 images in my blog gotta take like 16 shots and sort out the best ones (focus and colour-wise). Then crop and fine tune them. It freaks me out: I just can't have a pic and leave as is if it doesn't look true to what I did. This clashes in so many ways with people arround the net, digitally enhacing their work. It looks better but not true to what it looks like IRL. Unsuscribed people on youtube just cause they encouraged that practice.

TBH pics looked way pinkier than real like. So pop and vibrant but again not true. So had to do something.

About the painting itself, I'll share a secret with you: there's people out there saying "wanna be better painter? be brave" Be not, my friend.
Taking risks will take you to the next level, but be aware. It will work as long as you are in safe ground. Painting a space marine? Go nuts! You probably know the mini so well you can try a cenithal priming in reverse, as light was coming from below. Painting a space ice-cream monster? You already took the risk with the mini itself, be conservative about painting or most likely you will screw up things.

Tried a stripped look, painted it perlescent, mottled with metallic red and magenta, masked and went to town for blue. Stippled between pearl and blue, filtered... and the secondary flavour being green didn't help but to make it look like planet earth melting (poetical but not great mini to look at).

Enough of avoiding strawberry, magenta was a safe bet: a traditional and neat (freehanded those cracks) approach worked wonders. The final contrast touch was the chocolate to enhace the gap between blue and yellow-ish cookie.

So, how does it taste now?

Parecía el p*to planeta tierra derritiendose!

Y bien ? Espero que os guste el helado!

Stay focused! (I'm not your Newtype)

Matter or fact I got crappy plastic robots (buy baits for kiddos, stuffed with few candy and such) lying arround for a decade and a half now.

So cheesy and cheap I had to get them. But my lack of focus prevents me from getting a damn thing finished. Days agoI wanted to paint something blue and thought: hey, let's pimp a cheap roboto.

What you are looking at now is the guy that is to fit inside the robot. Pilot will be varely visible indeed and now I fell so sorry I'm looking for a bigger cock(mnnn!)pitted robot for him command.

Even wanting him monochrome (cockpit lights, and such) tryed to give him some dignity throwing in some greens and purples.

Hope you like it. Coming next... Cthulhu!

llll

Red Test Soulstone Demon (Creatures from hell Fantasy & Games Scalecolor set review + Coagulated Blood from greenstuff world)

Fluff-wise this one is the same you can see in my previous post. This time it's the lower half of the greater demon that was slayed trying to regenerate over the inner soulstone shard aka black/vanilla stoney demon.

The belly demon face came out a piece of John Blanche's art called Cthuloo Inferno that can be found in the old heroes for Wargames book. If that isn't oldschoolness I dunno what is.

The Review out of Hell:

Ok. Got the whole set of fantasy & games (scalecolor) paints over the regular range right after trying this. Why ? U stoopid ? Follow reading...

The step by step was confusing, as pics didn't look like matching what was the written there. I liked the other one better, but my biggest con here is the color choices.

The F&G red (creatures from hell) set includes just 2 true reds out of 8 paints. If you wanna be fair, you can say it's 3 reds, counting the hastur purple. TBH you get 2 yellows, 1 fleshtone 2 oranges (one of them is something between a red hue and a fleshtone) 1 purple and TWO reds. 25% of red in my red set, thanks so much sir!

This is common thru the range: a tan hue in the orc set (wich someone may expect to be just naming for a green paint set) a jade green in the elven set, wich supposedly is a blue paint set, etc.

That annoyed me beyond imagination. The blood and fire set is 5 reds, 1 purple, 1 orange and 1 yellow. You got 62,5% of red bottles here!

Unsure of wich of the 2 ways the instructions booklet offers I went the rediest path (again, pics, at least on my set are really confusing) and gave it go. And...

Oh boy, went to town with these. While reading the step by step you can feel kinda stupid as your base for red is orange, something educated painters try to avoid: pinkish and orangeish reds. I put emphasis on this: Educated Painters. We do tuff on rails.

It worked wonders (hope it shows thru pics how vivid this red is). I had already 2 racks of Vallejo paints. Paints bought thru a lifetime but as kids buying candy: now fancy a red then a grey and so on and so forth. I can say I have a juicy Vallejo collection but it's kinda unbalanced. You need to work thru it and after some effort you get nice results but lacking the wow factor I wanted. I've been feeling like lacking vibrant and powerful comic like colours, and Scalecolor F&G range gave me that, no matter their weird choices.

In fact it's as a range, cleverly AF put together as every color in the range interacs like a miracle with any other: You can take a deep red (WTF!?) from the black and white (shades of doom) set  and put next to a tan (WTF again!) from the green (orcs) paint set next to a blue and it won't look like Bonzo the clown. All these hues get really well together.

And now I may be spending more effort and time on the shadows than highlighting, wich indeed is the base colour showing with a touch of lights here and there. Why not? it works.
These paints are thinner and dry satin, but still you can thin them to death using just water without breaking. Perfect for glazing. Decent coverage. Quality product, on par with the regular range (just technical differences) great both for experienced and beginner painters.

I didn't intend a technical review but to share my feelings about both ranges. I starded writing this on February and finally decided to go thru it as if I was speaking to a friend while having a drink instead of giving internets a masterclass about how much I know about paints. It's been hard (FEBRUARY!!) to decide between the 2 ranges and harder to verbalize why, as both are great paints.

What you see isn't just the creatures from hell stuff: I used greenstuff intensity inks for glazing but in the end, the result was closer to what I had prior to using them, while the glazing work really swifted the result in my previous post.

The mini me review:

Coagulated blood from greenstuff world,  almost forgot. This is a nod to my fellow blogger Allison from Painting Agency who's been running arround with scissors lately :) Piece of cake, simply put they might be bottling real hobbo blood there. Haven't tried Citadel's blood for the blood god yet, but AFAIK I think it's safe to say these are pretty close products.

It dries shiny and thick coats get dark and behave like real blood should. Ease of use, fair pricing... It's somehow dense, it reminds me of Tamiya clear red, but acrylic based. Thanks to a friend I briefly gave Vallejo's blood effect a try but wasn't convinced: it's just 2 shades of regular red and feel like rebranded bottles not newly formulated ones. The Greenstuff world tho, is glossy and thicker so it doesn't feel like you are paying just for another bottle of red.

If you've been able to read till now, congrats! You got a free discount code for a kick in my ass if you ever see me IRL. Word.

A mi me costó mucho tragarme esa pastilla.

Greenstuff World Coagulated blood.

Red Test Soulstone Demon ( Scalecolor Blood and fire red paint set review)

Subject: Something to slap red paint over so I choosed demons. Wanted something else, so borrowed a little from The Bane (faction from Crucible game) and Rogue Trader.

Dmons are beings from another dimension, inmaterial and such. They are willing to enter our dimension and prey on us so they need either to possess someone or to be infused into something.

Thus, they create stone objects to be a vector of "extra dimensional infection" or possession (Devilman or Demons, the 80s flick). The other way is to create stone larvas, like golems. The more sacrifices of sentient beings, the stronger is the dmon born from the blood soaked stone larva. The smallest wound or scratch with an object made out of such stone could also infect a living being with demonic soul.

According to that fluff, I imagined a big ass dmon split in half. These halves started to regenerate sepparatedly, that's why its arm looks like a big face.

The black half is meant to be a shard of demonic stone (HostStone ?) while the red part is flesh in the vein of Marvel's symbiontes. The red goo (demonic flesh) bleeds out of the stone when it absorbs blood.

Purpose: to test Blood and Fire red paint set from Scalecolor (and decide wich range of paints, this or their Fantasy & Games -F&G from now on- I will stick to).
Thoughts: Didn't knew what to do with the soulstone, in the end I went for a space dust/universe texture.

On the reds, pros over the fantasy range is that those Scalecolor paints are really dense as it's medium is gel based. You can thin them down a lot and using them is really satisfiying.

Color selection speaking, this set is superior to F&G as it includes more red hues and just 1 orange, 1 purple and 1 yellow. wich makes a lot of sense when you are buying a RED paint set.

The step by step tutorial wich I followed is clearer and better than the other range's too.

Finally, those dry super matt. It's a nice bonus depending on what you are looking for.

I can't recommend Scalecolor paints enought. Experienced painters will get an absurd amount of features they'll love, from rich colors to smooth blendings, while regular painters will have a quality product offering great coverage and a satisfying  experience on aplication.

If I had to choose between regular scalecolor and their F&G range, based on final results I would recommend this one over, specially to bust painters and people pursuing the sheer joy of paint.

What you see isn't just the set tho. I finished the model adding few fantasy and games touches to make both pieces (see review part 2) look similar.

I also pumped contrast and vibrancy glazing greenstuff intensity inks. And this is maybe this range biggest con: it's not bottled magic, the recipe gives you great results but you need few extra steps (totally makes sense tho) and ingredients to get the wow factor.

In the end I purchased the whole F&G range. Why I did so, being so happy with those? You'll find the answer in my next entry. Stay tuned folks!

Blood and fire (red) Scalecolor paintset.
