Saint Patrick 's GREEN

Night before St. Paddy... great opening; japanese GREEN sweets and cristal clear idea in my mind, let's sketch it out.

In the Na'vi ! my avatarD take on Cameron's movie. Didn't like it THAT much but a fellow blogger was trying to paint an avatar figure and I told I'll help him so I started creating a demo dummy :)

In the Na'vi !

Worst Mini Ever ! For real. It went so smoothly, I made flat shapes on arms and hands to get a toon approach, I made it taller instead of just bigger, filled every gap seamlessly and fell in love with those ultracute ears. It was fun and it was fast (few hours).

Then everything went WRONG. It got brittle and so many things broke at the same time; both ears and feet, tail and weapon. I spent over +3 hours trying to fix the mess but new putty wasn't sticking and the more I tried the worse everything got.

Lucky to me, when it comes to mini to man relationship I'm a ruthless motherfucker so I stood awake till 5 in the morning fixing this up. In the en, it looks more or less like it initially did.

Now, how did it ended ? What gave me strenght to finish things up ? Alcohol (whine) of course. Wich better way to start St. Paddy's anyway. Tony Stark approves this post. Cheers, hope you like it, If so this would've been worth the effort.

  4. Heh... nice creation. Sounds like it was a real beast to finish though! I've had sculpting projects go horribly awry, but they usually feature me putting a thumb right onto a painstakingly created piece before it's set, or something dumb like that.

Your comment on my blog about Doctor Who minis was bang on by the way: they ARE the Harlequin minis, sold through Black Tree. I don't know if BT actually has the molds, but I suspect so. The figures arrives in Ziploc baggies, rather than any packaging with "Harlequin" on it. (and I guess I was lucky, their customer service is apparently appalling, and the bigger the order, the more appalling it gets!)

  5. PS: I like the shotgun, you used the brown putty that dries harder for that, right? I've never tried using that stuff.

  6. Thanks for your comment.

I actually cheated on you all! it was studio sculpey (green) and premo sculpey (gold). All polymeric clays, not epoxidic putties.

    Yeah, I'm that twistedly evil.

BTW our thumbs are sculptor's greatest enemies, specially w/ polymeric clays that stay soft forever (till they are baked).

Anyway, premo on its workable stage is harder than studio so the principle is the same I guess, although IMHO milliput is cheaper than brown stuff but is reactive to water so you can smoth it with a wet tool before it sets and then sand and file as much as you want once cured.

Ziploc baggies... I wouldn't thrust 'em anymore. Try get them thru ebay, I'm sure there are still Dr.W. minis arround.
